Cognate with German Sprosse, Dutch sport, Icelandic sproti.\nThe plural Sprëss was built by analogy with Tratt > Trëtt, which has underlying Middle High German -i-. It must have been formed after the merger of both phonemes (which seems fairly recent, though at least 18th c.). The Luxemburger Wörterbuch still attests the older (albeit equally analogous) form Spräss.",
